Two Types of Coping Strategies

Challenges and stressful events can disrupt a person’s sense of control. They can also evoke negative emotions such as anxiety, fear, sadness, or anger in the individual. Coping mechanisms allow and assist individuals to regulate their emotions and alleviate psychological distress.

Coping strategies are broadly classified into two types:

  • Problem-Focused Coping

Problem-focused coping is an approach that involves actively addressing and managing the underlying problem or stressor. These coping techniques aim to alter the situation or one’s behavior to decrease or eliminate the source of stress. Problem-solving, seeking information or assistance, formulating a strategy, or taking action to remedy the situation are all examples of problem-focused coping.

  • Emotion-Focused Coping

The emotion-focused coping approach focuses on managing the emotional responses to a stressor. It is a way of dealing with stress that does not entail attempting to change the source of the stress. Instead, it focuses on changing the individual’s reaction to the stressor. Emotion-focused coping might be beneficial in instances where the stressor is unchangeable, such as a chronic disease or a loss in the family. It can also be useful when the person does not believe they have the ability to modify the stressor, such as a job loss or a challenging relationship.
